Dal

Ingredients

  • 500g split yellow peas
  • salt
  • 1-3 tbls olive oil/unsalted butter (depending on how healthy you want to be)
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tbls garlic
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric
  • 1tbls curry powder
  • 1 tbls ginger
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • chili (either powder or flakes)
  • water

Directions

Soak peas overnight in warm water with 1tsp salt. Warm pressure cooker with olive oil. Put cumin seeds in hot oil and toast for a min or so. Add finely chopped onions and stir fry until light brown. Add garlic, tumeric, curry powder (the taste of the dal depends on the quality/quantity of curry powder) and ginger (optional). Add chili powder to taste. Quick fry these spices for 10 seconds or less. Add dual and stir in hot water (1 cup dal:2 cups water). Add salt to taste (max. 1 tbls for 500g of dal). Pressure cook for 30 mins (or until done). You can blend the whole mixture or just eat it as is. The dal can be served hot or cold with rice, as a soup, or with cornbread.
